Health effects of moderate drinking | The Daily AztecIf you’re curious about alcohol and cholesterol, I have good news for the booze lovers out there. Drinking a little bit of alcohol can lower your LDL, or bad cholesterol levels, and increase your HDL or good cholesterol levels! This seems counterintuitive to many people who know that alcohol abuse is really bad for you. But remember, we’re talking about moderate alcohol consumption here. This means one drink a day for women, and two drinks a day for men.

Drinking too much alcohol will definitely increase your cholesterol, blood pressure, and risk of heart attack or stroke. But drinking just a little, which requires some self control and restraint, will decrease your risk for these potentially lethal conditions. This is especially important if you have a history of heart disease or cardiovascular disease. This is the so-called “French Paradox” that explains why red wine consumption is so healthy for you.
